Drum Brakes
 

Recently I have noticed my Drum Brakes squeaking not during breaking but during acceleration. I looked at them a few weeks ago and the pads don't look worn down and the drum feels like it doesn't have any unusual wear in it. I sprayed the breaks with cleaner. The sound went away for maybe a day then it came back. A thought I had was maybe it could be the axle but the sound goes away when I apply the breaks. I forgot to mention that the squeak is rhythmic, as in for every rotation of the tire is one squeak.Any ideas on what to do?

1. Sand the shoes down with light git sand paper. NO TOO MUCH! You might have a high spot or hot spot on them.
2. Adjust the shoes inwards, then make sure then self adjusters are moving them back. The self adjusters may need cleaned and/or regreased.
3. Make sure theres no bad spots on the drum itself. Clean the hell out of everything if the noise is still there. Place some grease on the back side of the shoes where they touch the backing plate. Grease all the moving parts. Off roading will hold dirt in the grease and make it useless.

The first one should do the trick right off the bat so start there.

Is there wear markers on drum brakes? If that might be the squeak.

Jack the vehicle up in the rear,just one wheel at a time,and rotate the tire by hand to determine which side it is(don't assume that once you find a side with a noise that the other side is fine,check them both). I had a backing plate that had been tweaked just a bit after screwing around doing donuts in fairly deep snow in a unplowed parking lot, the inside lip of the drum had just alittle scale and it would run/squeak when it rubbed once every rotation. Just slid a painters flat bar in and scraped with lip of the drum and tweaked the backing plate back out(tiny amount was enough).

Mine do the same thing. Even after i replaced the back drum brakes.

05' 4x4 has rear drum.

Bebop - I know this is an old thread but I am having the same problem and I was wondering if you found a solution. I have an 06 with discs up front and drums in the rear. Same deal, a "chirp" at a certain point in the wheels rotation, speeds up as I accelerate and goes away when braking.

I had the EXACT same problem with my 91 i would take the drum off and spray it down and sand the shoes,it would go away for a while then come back or so i thought. Mine ended up being the differential was completely out of oil. This made the wheel bearings whine sounding like a brake squeal. Turns out you can drive a truck about 30 miles with no oil in the differential, I learned the hard way. Not saying this is your problem but might give it a look. P.S. I just got the truck and never suspicioned it being out of oil.
