exhaust, muffler, etc....

So I got a used 2002 silverado about a year ago and it came with some sort of dual exhaust. I'm not sure what brand or anything but all i know is that the pipes are pretty small and not as loud as i would like them to be. What are my choices to make it louder? Some of my friends have just cut off the muffler and ran a pipe where it was, but does that affect gas mileage or anything. Thanks for the help and any suggestions are welcome.

Don't just cut the muffler off or you'll kick yourself in the butt over all the torque your gonna lose. I'd suggest saving up and getting a reputable muffler shop to weld a Flowmaster Super 40 muffler on there and maybe some new tips. If it already has the duals set up they probably won't charge you more than $200 for a muffler and chrome tips.

but what if he already has a flow 40? "not loud enough" is an opinion... im partial to cutting cats off and leaving the muffler...

depends on the year if cutting cats helps. on the 5.3 it doesn't as it adds needed backpressure, and it better for the environment so leave them on there, you aren't losing any power. Any idea what is on there now? Or at least the design (dual pipes and mufflers, single in dual out, etc.) and what year and motor.

Just take it to a muffler shop and have them see what you have on the truck already then you can go from there.

Well that's the same price I paid to have my exhaust done at a shop. $245 out the door.

Mine might have been a little cheaper than duals out the rear cause I got my duals pointed out on front of the back right tire which means they didn't have to use as much exhaust pipe. But it shouldn't be much of a difference. Maybe $20. I like my side exit exhaust better though! It's louder and it isn't the same thing everyone else on the block has!

Smoke 20, I got a 5.3 Liter with single muffler (single in dual out). I crawled under the truck today and i know the muffler is flowmaster but i couldn't tell what series or anything (do you know where that info is located?).
