Fiberglass casing around the driveshaft?

Hi,

There is some sort of fiberglass casing/coating around the driveshaft on my truck that ripped away while driving on the highway the other day. Half of this "casing" went away and when I resumed my driving, vibrations were noticeable. Once I removed the rest, no more vibration.

My question is "what is this stuff around the driveshaft"? Does it gives strength to the driveshaft, is it intended to reduce acoustic vibrations or just to protect the driveshaft from rocks and other hazards?

My Chev is a 1997 Silverado K1500, 5.7L 4X4.

Thanks.

Not sure where thats from. Thats a first for me. I wouldn't worry too much about damage to the shaft without it. As long as vibration is gone, you should be ok.

Hey,
I had the same kind of casing on my parts truck with an aluminum driveshaft.

My guess is being that the driveshaft is aluminum, the casing protects it from getting damaged.

my 97 k1500 doesn't have that, so im guessing you'll be fine lol
