Default Fuel guage problems

I have an 01 Z71 i bought if from and auction so i dont know a lot about it but the price was right. I know it has a K&N air system. After market exhaust dont know much about exhaust so i really dont know what kind it is i just know it sounds good. Anyways the only problem im having is with the fuel guage. It will show the right level and then it will bounce to empty it will probably do this every few min or so. When i fill it up it shows empty. From what i can tell when it does show a fuel level it is fairly accurate. Just curious if it is something that is an easy fix or if it is a problem with the actual sending unit. If anyone has any ideas that would be nice.

Might as well get a new strainer too while it is apart.

Mine does it too.. been doing it since 60,000 miles.. i was just too lazy to take it to the dealership when I had a warranty on it

I asked my mechanic about it once and he said it would cost around $600 to fix.. something about everything being one unit and i would have to replace the whole thing if i wanted the light to stop coming on.. I told him i would pass..

Was he BS'ing me?

The job is about 675$ GM if the whole pump/sender is put in.

Again...don't get a cheapie...you'll be sorry!
