Fuel pump

I have a 97 K1500. Question is, when the fuel pump finally goes out is thre a gradual decline, or does it just stop working.

I replaced the radiator yesterday, went out and ran some errand, it was working fine. Came home, and a couple hours later went out and it would not start. Turns over just fine. Very frustrating to have it not start when it was fine a couple hours earlier.

It depends. But only way to be sure is hook up a fuel pressure gauge when it does not wanna start.

Well I took off the fuel filter, I had one I bought a bit ago and never put on, just to make sure filter was not clogged. I left it off and turned on the truck, turned it over, and did not get any fuel coming out, so I am going to assume the pump is bad.

It was the fuel pump. New one installed in about 3 hours, and about 80 bucks for a new pump. Truck starts up great now.

Better this weekend than when I am up in the hills hunting next.

mine went out all at once, truck was in parking lot at work and would not start, ran fine that morning. But I could not hear the pump running, so i was suspect of fuel pump.

tow bill + gm dealership replacement cost around $600 with 45K miles

gm tech told me to change fuel filter at 15K intervals and never let fuel get below 1/4 full in tank as fuel cools the pump.

so far at 95K it is still running.

note: always keep a rubber hammer in tool box, some say you can beat on tank a few time with the rubber hammer and many times the pump will run one more time, at least you would save the tow bill.

Fuel Filter

I cant get my filter off. ITs rusted underneath the truck. Ive had one for months but dont want to take it off and break something. Local guy said he would change filter for $15 for me since I already had filter. I just hope if he or it breaks he finishes the job for $15 and not $150.
