Default Gas Gauge

i have an 01 gmc sierra 1500 and the gas gauge is all wacky it goes form empty to what i have in the tank a couple of times each drive. i think its the sensor but i think the sensor and fuel pump are all in one. is there anything i can do to fix this? or do i need to buy a whole new one?. also do any of you know how long it will do this before it stops even reading or will it just do it forever?

ya my 01 1500 did the exact same thing. it went on for awhile until my pump finally quit. when i replaced it the gauge worked fine as you are right about it being together. but i do not know if you can fix just the gauge.

sounds like a sending unit problem.

It is a sending unit problem which is very common on these trucks. Mine had the same problem and i ended up forgetting how much gas was in my tank and ran it dry and burned up the pump, it cost me about $350. but the sending unit and pump are one unit, if you don't fix the problem the fuel gauge motor will wear out, like mine works totally fine till it gets just below 1/4 tank then it just drops to empty. You can try to pull the pump and bend the metal fingers on the sending unit so it makes better contact, it'd take a little time but if your short on cash it can save you $350.
