I have a new '09 with the 5.3 and it's getting a little over 15 mpg around town. I don't have enough highway miles to give you a good number there. It seems like a pretty good engine. Enough power to move you out of other folks way but not so much that you're peeling rubber every time you get on it. Good luck.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

This site will tell you the real fuel economy of any vehicle made since 1984 and it will tell you the EPA estimates, which always seem to be strangely askew...hmm

The new Gen III and Gen IV 5.3 engines do really well. And the 5.3 should have AFM which really helps gas mileage. My 6.0 gets 16-18 in town and over 21 on the highway. So the 5.3 should get better than that. One guy, who had a new body style with the 5.3, said he gets about 26-28 on the highway but he didn't tell me how it was in town. I would expect it to be pretty good, even if it is stock.

Is the truck that you are looking at a new body style or classic?

17-19 is my guess. My brother just got a 2005 with a 5.3 4x4 and it's getting over 18 driving through hills and curvy roads. It should be good is all I'm saying.
