Gasoline smell outside new (to me) 2500
 

Hi all - I just replaced my old chevy pickup with a less old chevy
pickup. It's a 2000 2500 work truck, fuel injected. Runs really well, but I've
noticed the smell of gas fumes, usually right after I park it. It
doesn't linger very long, but it's pretty strong when I first hop out
of the cab. Thoughts on where to start looking for the source?
Gasket at the sending unit? Should I start with dropping the tank and
looking there, or can you think of other easy places to check out
first?

Also, this fuel pump on this truck is particularly noticeable when it
primes, and it runs for a second after I turn off the motor... does
that sound normal to you?

I would definitely crawl under under the truck and trace the fuel lines from the tank to the fuel rail under the hood. The pump running for a second after shutting it off is normal. I had a tahoe that leaked on the top of the tank and gave me a gas smell, but only when the tank was 3/4 or higher full. It ended up being that when Best Buy installed an amplifier under the rear seat they ran the mounting screw right into the tank. Of course they denied it and wouldn't do anything about it. A little JB weld and an afternoon of dropping a tank and reinstalling it and it was fixed. This might sound stupid - but my brother bought a truck and drove it home once and smelled gas when he got out and it turned out someone had stolen the gas cap and he didn't notice it was gone. That will cause an odor as well. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply... I'll get under there today to sniff it out... will report back. Gas cap is the first thing I checked a couple weeks ago. Now that's a crappy story you reported with the Best Buy installation - those outfits seems happy to lock things in with as many long, self-tapping screws as they want...
