Default Gears???

I have been having problems with my rear end locking up on me when stopped at stop lights.I am going to get it in the shop this week and see if servicing and everythinghelps it.I hope I don't end up having to do a new rear end but if I do I was planning on putting better gears in it. Can anyone explain what I need to know about it. I know nothing about gears and suchso. What gears should I get? What brands and how much? Whatever you all can give me would be cool. Thanks

Sorry to here your having trouble. That always sucks, especially when it's gonna be pricey. I don't know much about differentials as far as gearing goes. I know you want a good limited slip differential in there and if your wanting better acceleration and don't mind sacrificing some gas mileage, you might try switching to something like a high 3.XX or maybe even 4.10. If you'll take the time to use the search feature located up top between the words "calenders" and "contact TF" you'll be able to find SEVERAL recent threads about gearing as far as which brands to use, what gear ratios produce which results and so on. This gets talked about a lot so don't be suprised if no one else chimes in here.

As far as brand, just go with a well known company (like genuine gear) and you will be fine. For the ratio, you probably have a 3.42. For better power and accelleration go with 3.73 or 4.10. The higher you go the more milage will drop off though. But if you plan on larger than stock tires it will even back out. Also you can plan on a 1 mpg difference frm 3.42 to 3.73, and 2 mpg from 3.42 to 4.10.

yea i wanted to see if i could get an idea of where i am with the larger tires. i broke loose on the highway the other day. and it just hauls *** at higher rpms and is a bit of a dog around town. seems like the truck likes a load or high rpms to get anywhere.

My truck rides a little nicer with some weight in the back.

spaz- I cannot find a chart that goes to that low gear ratio, but a calculator program may help as well as just doing the math.
