Help with canceling codes

Hi all.I have a 1999 k1500 5.7 4x4 277,000 mi.I do not have the OBDII code reader. The Haynes manuel says codes can be cancelled by disconnecting the neg battery ground. Not on this truck!Have tried several times to no avail. In the past it worked. (I remember reading that you could pull the batt ground cable off at the same time leaving the headlight switch on for 30 minutes to cancel the codes).I am diagnosing a P0160.I installed a new 02 sensor (No SEL at the time) and after driving less then 10 mi the SEL came on.
Anyone know any tricks?

You might start by reading P0160 02 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

Why did you change the sensor? Where you having this or another problem with the sensor? There could be another problem other than the sensor causing the light to come on.

I'd suggest biting the bullet and buy a code reader. They are a handy tool for the toolbox and can save you a trip to the dealer. Autozone will read codes for free but I don't think they will clear codes, especially if they are emissions related, but it might be worth asking.

I changed the sensor because of the code.Autozone clears my codes for me.Was just under the truck and I do not have voltage at the sensor.Checking fuses now and tracing the harness wiring.Anybody else on my op question?

Ok..It turns out I have 12volts at the connector (sensor unpluged).I go to the parts store and have the code cancelled,it's only 5 miles..the sel stays off.So.I am wondering why I didn't have voltage under there and then I did again??Sel comes back on after unpluging the sensor again and no voltage again! Is this because the system circuit went into a loop?
