how do i adjust column shifter to match transmission?

I have a 1989 GMC Sierra c2500 my column shifter is not in sync with my transmission. when its in park, its really in neutral, etc....how can I fix this? This happened when I changed gears while replacing my ignition switch. Thank you to all who can help out here.

Those have a cable that is clipped to the column. You will need to remove the cover just under the steering column and you will see what I am talking about. I always pull the shifter all the way down to the lowest gear (indicator furthest to the right) then take the clip off and align it with that mark. Sometimes you may have to adjust it a couple times, but you can get it.

Thank you Mr Shamrock, problem solved!

No problem! Glad you got it fixed!

I have the same issue on a 1989 Silverado 4x4. I bought this for my daughter. I have removed the cover under the steering column, but can't see any clip or cable, only wires.
Does this clip on outside of the column? Do you have a picture? I can only see wires, and wires. I have moved the shifter from park to 1 and nothing moves

The cable should come down from the cluster area. Does the indicator move at all?

1989 Silverado gear shift indicator does not move

No it doesn't. There is a plastic round piece around the column, and I can see under it, but can't find any clip or cable. I can remove the instrument cluster and look from that end. Maybe someone remove it, or it slipped off? Is it supposed to be right below the gear shift ring on the column?

With the panel removed, I have looked 4 or 5 times and felt all around the column...have shifted from park to first, and nothing moves (except the shift ring)...

It is possible that it has come loose and is up in the cluster somewhere or broken off. If you remove the surround that goes around the cluster you should be able to see it. It is a small braided line with a metal clip at the end.
