Random shutoffs/steering problems in my 01 Z71
 

I recently bought a 2001 Chevy Z71 extended cab with the LT package. The truck has 176,000 miles on,but the truck is in excellent condition. I got it in a little mud so i washed it off,but right after i washed it off and cranked it up to move it, the whole truck just turned off-motor and everything and it was still in drive when it turned off. This happened one other time proceeding the first time. We found a loose connection between the battery and the truck,and i think this might have caused it,what's your thoughts/opinions?

Second problem. While pulling into a parking space,the steering wheel sort of frooze and became real hard to steer. I had to turn the truck on and off real quick to fix the problem. What is causing this?

Also, can anyone else notice a difference between driving a Z71 and a two wheel drive. The regualr ole' chevy seems to steer alot smoother.


UPDATE: While pulling into a parking spot, the engine shutoff and the steering froze up. I think making a sharp trun causes it to do this. I would really like some input so i can hopefully fix this problem without breaking my almost empty wallet.

For the truck shutting off question - mine did that when the positive battery cable shorted straight to the truck frame after the insulation on the wiring melted thru against the exhaust manifold. It also fried my battery. You're probably on the right track with the loose connection thing. You probably fixed it but keep your eyes open. If it does it again, check if any of the normal running lights on the truck are still on, but are on very dim. Hit your horn. If it's very weak you probably have a short to ground.

As for your steering locking, check your power steering fluid and your belt(s). If the fluid is low you might also hear a whining sound when you turn the wheel. If the belt is worn or loose you might hear a squeal. Not sure if these are your problems but those are the first places I would check cuz they're easy and cheap.

Is your Z 4wd? I don't, but my general understanding is that the Z71s and/or 4wd has a stiffer suspension than regular Chevys.

Yes, it's a 4x4 Z71. When we got the connector secured back to the battery, the light under the hood came back on. Also,i do not know if this has any relevance,but the truck is equipped with a remote starting system.I'll check the power steering fluid and see if it is full.

Check your belt and make sure the tensioner is tight. If it is stretched out it will slip making the steering wheel feel as though it is froze up.
