Idle Questions
Got my 95 K1500 back from the shop; they replaced the intake manifold gasket and the rear end. I have noticed though that it is idling at a higher speed than what seems normal. Even when the engine is warm, it is idling at 6000. And then after I drive it for a while on the highway (like 20 miles) and then hit a stoplight, it is alternating idling at 6K and 5K. Like it will idle at 6k for 10 seconds, drop down to 5k, feel a little shakey, then back up to 6k. It does this for maybe 30 seconds then just starts idling again at 6k.
Do you think this has anything to do with the recent repairs, or is it a separate issue? If it is a separate issue I would like to take it to a different mechanic; the ones who did the repairs are on the other side of town. Thanks! |
If you are idling that high, it is surely a problem created after the repairs by the mechanic. He needs to look at it again and fix his mistake.

Oops, meant hundred not thousand. So it is going from between 500-600. It wants to stall out at 500, kicks it back up to 600, drops down again. But it sounds like it is idling fast at 600.

A vacum leak will cause this. Maybe a hose or throttle body gasket. The idle control valve can cause this also.

Thanks! Would any of those cause it to smell hot? That was another issue I had yesterday when I drove it.

I would check the timing they may have just guessed when they put the distibutor back in. Although 5-6 hundred isn't a high idle.
