Ignition
I was wondering whats up with aftermarket ignition boxes/controll/etc. I was looking at a MSD 6AL Ignition. I read all about it in the magazine, but still dont understand how its different what I already have, save for adjusting rev limits. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
What year truck do you have? The late trucks, like my 2003 have individual coils, which are more then enough for mild modification. I beleave that unless you are gonna do some serious mods leave the OEM ignition alone. Remember, Blaster coils, Throttle body, and a good fuel management system go hand in hand. In order to see noticable results these key OEM parts need to be upgraded. I dont know what mods you already have, and I know I sound like a broken record player, but if you havent, definitly complete your exhust system. Then move on to these mods. If you do this you will not be dissapointed. The mods I mentioned above are very expensive. Having a good game plan when modifying a vehicle is very important. Make a list of all the things you want, then you wont spend unnecssary money. For example, if you want a twin turbo set-up dont waste the money on a cold air intake system. I hope this helped and good luck.
i just got done reading"engine mastersmag" where they took a 325ci/5.3l block, bore and stroked it out to a 383ci added a bunch of higher end parts and upgrades said they were making around 611hp and 575? ft lbs of torque. anyway they kept the stock coils. said theyhad plenty ofpep to get the job done..

The aftermarket MSD coils will help you if you have timing advanced and run a cooler thermostat and also always use 91+ octane fuel. The coils send multiple sparks under 3,000 RPM's, above that it will fire a really hot spark. This helps burns all the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber. These work really well for big time Hot Rodders with big blocks and pump alot of fuel to those cylinders and need something to burn all of that fuel. The stock coils on these trucks are probably the best out of the LSx based motors. Even better than the coils on the LS1 motors. Adding the MSD coils with mild or no modifications will only, IMO, boost gas mileage, which we all wouldn't mind that! Add a hot cam, FAST intake, good exhaust, and those coils will benefit that combonation big time!
