Increase fuel economy

Hi guys I had a Dodge diesel that I loved but unfortunately it was stolen from me while at an airport, I'm a pilot. I found myself a good deal on a used 05' Z71 quadcab. It has the larger V8 and I know they don't get the best milage. I bought it though anyway because I pull a boat for fishing and don't usually drive that much. However, now I'm finding myself driving a lot of trips around 200-300 miles. Once a week or maybe twice. I was wondering if there is a chip or something I could do to boost my fuel milage. On my cummins I had chipped it and got an extra 4mpg out of it. When driving 1000 miles a week it was well worth it. However I don't really know anything about this engine and would have NO idea about what kind of parts I should get. If anyone can provide me a link to fuel efficient parts or know of a few searches I could do off hand that would be great. Personally I don't mind losing power if it means gaining mpg on those longer hwy trips. As long as I could alter it back when yanking the boat around.

Thanks for any help
Duck

also some of the guys are talking about doing a group buy on a custom tune maybe you can get in on that and make it cheaper for everyone.

well I'm looking to spend from $1000 or less. Hopefully around the $500 mark. I don't want to make it lounder than hell either. What's the best route to go? Exhaust and air intake? Does a chip make that much difference? Recommendations???

if you did a different intake and exhaust and some of those mods it would like a completely different truck. and the chip would only improve all those mods. anyways you could get all that done for that kind of budget.

I have a 05 just like yours but the ext. cab and i have dual exhaust and tb spacer and a couple other of the free mods and i get 18 mpg but that is with larger tires also i was getting 18mpg before i did anything to my truck so i would say if you stick with normal size tires and do some of these mods you sould be at least 20 mpg if not more. Let us know if you need any help. Thanks

And yes a few of us are doing custom tunes at the end of summer.

I have the same truck as well and if really baby the throttle you can get great milage. You can actually pull back on the throttle a little when you get to speed, just to the point where you are losing speed and save alot. Also as Argon said, keep it at 60-65 and the milage is great, I just can't seem to make myself do it. Intake and exhaust will help as well as the custom tune. This combined is within your budget.
