Default Intake Mod 2

I was going to ask this in jcbst12's thread, but decided to start a new one.

The question is....Has anyone cut off the silencer box from their stock intake? I mean the box that is between the MAF and TB. I have read on other forums, about other vehicles, about deleting that piece and putting a cap over the place where you cut it off to re-seal the intake.

It seems to me that would make a slightly smoother air flow.

It would produce slightly less turbulence to the air going into the throttle body, but I don't know if it would produce noticable gains.

Upon closer inspection, I don't think this is possible. There doesn't look like a good way to re-seal the intake tube. I was trying to not spend the money for an AIRAID MIT or K&N intake. The airraid is like $110. For a 16" piece of plastic tube?? WTF??

I guess, ya gotta pay to play.

jsut put the top of a spray paint can in it thats what i did and it sealed perfectly. if you want to get fancy and put the box back on for looks you can seal it with a cut piece of metal and reinstall it.

Yeah, I was thinking $110 AIRAID, minimum.

And popo, I don't know if our intakes are different but that "silencer box" (is that correct?) is formed into the intake by a kindof teardrop shaped chamber. At first I thought it was round with a fin on it, but now I'm pretty sure I couldn't just cap it with something round.

mine had a small flap in the entrance to the intake by the filter, so i just took it out and used a rivet gun to hold a small 1/4 in. thick aluminum plate on. nothing noticable but its whatever works. my truck also had the option for a dual intake (im guessing for an 87 diesel?) so i bought another intake and wa-la. dual intake for $10. the intake tubes are right behind the grille. even airaid and k&n cant do that

The first silencer, between the block and wheel well can be significantly shortened by cutting it off 1/2 to 3/4" from the main and capping it with a Fernco rubber pipe cap available from you local home improvement store.

That is exactly what I was planning, but mine is such an odd shape, I don't see a good way to re-seal it.

I think I saw an Airaid mit in Summit fro $110 for my application.
