Leaking 1992 GMC 1500

just wondering if anyone can help.... i have a 1992 GMC 1500 4.3L V6. the truck sat for approx 2-3 years in a garage before i bought it. i have been driving for about a year now, and seems to have a slight oil leak coming from the oil pan. is this a common problem? and when i start the truck every morning it spits out a puff of smoke from the exhaust. but it clears up pretty quick. if anyone has ideas on what it is or what can do, id appreciate it. Thanks

The puff of smoke is probably your valve guide seals and is fairly common on the older trucks. Especially if they sit for a while and dry up. It isn't too bad of a job to fix them, but will not harm anything if left the way they are. You will just need to add a little more oil between changes. The oil leak could be from a few different locations, of course your oil pan is the lowest spot so it will accumulate there. It could be anything from valve cover gaskets, oil pressure sender, rear main seal, oil pan gasket just to name a few. You can do a little more checking to see how high you see the oil on the motor and trace it to it's origin. That's easier said than done due to how liquid will travel. Keep an eye on the your oil level though.
