limited slip vs. locker
im thinking about getting one of these for my truck (open diff just isn't cutting it), so let me see if i've got this straight:
a locker makes both wheels turn the same speed period. and a limited slip has a ratio that the wheels can turn at? like if the right tire is going 40, the left has to go at least 30? or something like that? |

Limited slip or posi from what I have been told, the more you push on the gas the more posi trac you get. If you floor it both tires will grab.

I alsohave been toldthat the lockers brake all the time. The new chevys have had alot of problems with young drivers flooing it and the locker explodes!

ive been debating this one myself. cant decide on which to use for on road use, id go offroad if it could take it.

On road the locker (if it is full time) will break stuff like axlex, gears, etc. The tires always spin the same speed, so corners are hard on the parts. A locker i great off road though as you get great traction. I would use a selectable locker so you could use it off road, or when drag racing in a straight line. If you want more traction on the road all the time, then a limited slip is the way to go. You can also get the limited slip to gain alot of traction by using a little brake pressure to fool it and make all 4 tires turn even when one is off the ground.

My rearend has been doing GREAT for me up until recently. I guess what ever El' Cheapo limited slip GM stuck in my Sierra has finally stopped working. I notice every time I am turning if I give it more than just a little bit of gas it chirps whichever tire is on the inside. Used to it would just grab and go. Ever since my last burnout a few weeks ago it has been doing this(DOH!).
So I too will be shopping fora good limited slip once I find a better paying job. May try and change my rear end gears while I'm at it. Not sure what I have now but my digital gas gauge tells me I'm getting like 13-15mpg with the cruise control set at 75mph, so I'll probably try to put a lower gear ratio in it. |

Put a higher gear ratio in it if you want it to get better fuel milage. As far as what chevy puts in there rear diffs, it is a locking rear diff. It really sucks when they break. they will strip the gear and then stop working all together, on top of stripping the gear, those particles will most likely get into the bearings in the carrier. That is the reason that mine went out on me about 2 years ago. I swapped it out for a posi rear end, it was cheaper than a direct replacement.
