based on what I can find online your fuel preasure should be between 54-64 psi what bothers me is the drastic "jump" from 45 to 60 when you "step" on it but when you hold 4000rpm it holds 45 psi...well below the minimum of 54 psi....I would try a regulator first it is cheaper and see if that helps at all and if it doesnt then go for the pump

OK so I have a delphi on the way, but I got to thinking about something...When I was on Rockauto, I saw the Airtex and saw that it included a wiring harness. Why does it need a wiring harness? Will my Delphi have one? Is the wiring that leads to the fuel pump cut when installing an Airtex? If so, what happens if the previous owner put an Airtex on at some time, will I have to buy a new wiring connector for my Delphi unit? Is there any way of knowing without dropping the tank if I will need to get a connector?

So I got my haynes manual in and I read that it said I needed to get some kind of a tool to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump. I was planning on doing the replacement tomorrow (Sunday) so I kinda need to know if somebody would give me some advice. I don't want to go and get the tool if I don't need it. But I also don't want to drop the tank if I don't have the tool but need it.

Do you happen to know the technical term for this tool? I would hate to look like a retard at the parts store sayin "that thingy that disconnects fuel lines from the pump." Do you think autozone or oreilly will have it? I found one on their website but it looks weird, but I haven't seen one before so is this it?

Sorry about the long link, don't know how to do that type of stuff.

Ok, I got the pump in. When I went to O'reilly they had a tool that was exactly a "Fuel line disconnect tool" and it even said "for disconnecting fuel line from fuel pump module on 1998 and later GM fullsize pickups." So I decided to drop the tank instead of lifting the bed. I got the tank down enough to disconnect the lines, finally figured out how to work the tool, and dropped the tank. It was extremely heavy. I figured out why. The gauge said it was empty but I was able to drain over fifteen gallons out of the tank. I replaced the fuel pump, changed the harness, and put the tank back on (much easier without all that gas). So I filled it back up with the filtered gas and put everything up and primed the pump a few times. The truck started right up and was running perfect. I backed it out of the shop and let it idle for about five minutes. Then I drove down the road. No problems. I did notice, however, that the pump was a lot louder than the old one. Maybe this is the way it's supposed to be? It was that loud from the first time I turned the key. I guess it's ok. It is a delphi unit which is what the truck came with from the factory.

I am surprised by the truck now. I thought it was weak feeling because it was a 305 since I'm used to the pull of my dad's 350 but now it's a banshee. I stepped on it and it jerked me back in my seat. It pulled to a little over 5000 rpm and no longer does that crap it used to. The gauge still isn't right, though. I think it's the actual gauge that's messed up. No big deal though since I know how much it has left when it says empty (1/2 a tank).

So is the pump supposed to be loud? It's not so loud that I can hear it while I'm sitting in my truck, but it is louder than the junk pump I did have. For the 20 miles I put on it now, it is a huge difference. I even measured my 0-60, which was 8.2. A lot better than the 12.6 that it was before. And not bad for a 305 long bed with 31X10.5 tires. I'm happy so far, so no one better try to bring me down. Oh my gosh, I need to quit writing this book already!!

Change your fuel pump, I know its not cheap but if its never been its time. I had same problem on my 98 Z71. If you do it your self make sure you clean top of tank first, you dont want ANY crap falling in the tank.
