Mixing Dexron

We are changing tranny filter on PU, have 2003, spec'd for Dexron III, can Dexron VI be used to replace Dexron III fluid dumped?

NO........must be Dextron/Mercon...........Dex 6 has additives that will tear up your tranny...that is more of a Dodge fluid if I remember right.

dexron vi is supposed to work in all other dexron applications (backwards compatible i believe they call it)

so you can put 6 in a truck calling for 3 but not 3 in a truck calling for 6.

Dexron is a GM tranny fluid not a Dodge tranny fluid. And Dexron VI is the newest tranny fluid that GM is using in the trannies. It has been in the trannies since 2005 from what I have read. Dexron III was used in 2004 and earlier, but I forgot how far back. It can be used in 1999 and present without any harm to your tranny. It is what I am going to use in my tranny once I finally get the chance to drop my tranny pan and instal an new filter and gasket. My buddy is using Type F tranny fluid in his 1999 Chevy Silverado with out any problems. It even shifts a bit harder since it has less friction modifiers in it. He did this after his dad and my father said that was always done in the past (1990 and past) to get a better shifting tranny... meaning firmer shifts and also prolonging the life of a tranny by eliminating the slipage a bit. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the info

Dexron III is no longer being made. That should answer your question. Later! Frank
