hello to everyone

i just got my first truck. its a 96 chevy c1500, it has a 97 motor in it with 87k miles on it. with recipt.

my questions are:

feels like the truck lacks power and gusels gas like a beast, i drive it like a old lady wat can this be?

the truck chasis have 280k miles, but i got the truck from a good friend and he gave me the recipt for the new motor. the truck has magnaflow exhaust. i deleted the cats on it, cus of one of my dads friends told me that they might be cloged. so i took them off. the gas milege got better, after i took off the cats and i took off the air lid from the air filter. it runs smoother feels like it has more power, but it still not to its potencial my dad had a 97 yukon and that truck used to move.

i did the oil change, fuel filter, oil filter, and sparck plugs. i have the new wires but still havent put them on... any suggestions or info will be apreciated thanks..

here some picks

could be rear end gear... is it a 350 or 305?

chevyc1500lemy Jul 9, 2010 07:26 PM

350 at 60 mph its at 2000rpm

Was the original motor a 350 or 305. Might be a computer issue.

2000 rpms at 60 seems high... my 97 is at 2000 at about 73

could explain the mileage, but not the power...

I guess I can assume you have a 4 spd auto. I have one too. There's just not much power in 3rd gear. And overdrive is only for mileage. Your tranny could have a good many miles on it. Could be not downshifting at the right time causing you to put more foot in it to get a downshift. Or it could simply be you aren't used to a GM overdrive automatic. As mentioned in an earlier post, a numerically higher gear ratio would help keep the truck in its power range (but hurt highway mileage). You prpbably didn't buy the truck to knock down 20 MPG, right?

i know they are not economical, but i wasnt thinking 10 12 mils per gallon iether. lol my uncles 6.0 hummer swolows that.

that what u were telling me about the tranny shifting is what i thought from the beging. is there a way to fix the down shift issue?

i feel like it dosnt down shift on time. in orter for it to down shif i have to basically full trottle. the tranny has around 87 97k miles.

I'd ask a mechanic that I trust to take a ride along with you. It could be too many things. Check the fluid level. Torque converter could be shot. Old servo. Who knows? Sorry.

Is the truck completely stock? Mine was a turd before I started adding parts. But my 3rd gear and overdrive was not gutless, but had plently of balls. Of course I had a 90 model with a 5.7 350. What I added was Edelbrock intake, underdrive pulleys, JBA shorty headers, glasspack then dualed out, and a Hyperteck Thermomaster chip with 160 degree T-stat. Around town I averaged 16-a7 MPG and on the Highway I averaged 21 MPG and that was at 75 MPH. Oh and I also had a tonnue cover too. It was a reg cab short bed with 373 gears, 275/ 70 R 15 for tires too. I miss that ruck. I like it better than my 04 GMC Sierra.
