Occasional Steering Noise
 

99 Silverado LS extended cab, 175K miles. I've noticed in the past probably 2 weeks that while i'm in a sharper turn my wheel, or collum (spl?), is making a noise that sounds most familiar with humming or maybe two surfaces rubbing. The wheel itself doesn't get any harder to turn. I already checked the master cylinder and its literally between Max and Min. I'm taking a 800 mile road trip (round trip) to Branson, MO in 3 days. Does this problem sound familiar?? Last thing I need is a breakdown headed to Missouri for the 4th! Thanks! 1meanmarine@gmail.com

your fine. i have the exact same chevy as you (if you have the 4.8 and 4wd) but both my chevy and my dads GMC both do it. its just a bit annoying at times. my best guess that its the rack and pinion bar but thats just the power steering fluid working its magic.

Yep, my wife's Tahoe does the same thing periodically. I have read about steering box replacement fixing it if it gets to where the steering has hard spots in it. Especially if, when stopped and making a turn, it has hard spots to one side and not the other. I think every complaint I read was a harder right hand turn for some reason.

was a recall on my 2002. got it fixed but it is again doing the same thing. mine makes a "popping" noise. only slightly noticeable and not all of the time. I think I remember hearing that it was something to do with being able to keep grease in a "boot" on the steering linkage...?
