Oil change over-fill problem, but not really.

I have a 1997 K1500 Z-71. 5.7 liter engine. I changed the oil in it and put 5 quarts with new filter like the manual said. Problem is that dipstick shows over-full by close to a quart! I checked part number on the dipstick (10190942) and I think thats the one that is supposed to be on theengine. Yes, I drained all the oil out. My buddy has a 1998 truck like mine. He used the sameoil filter I did, changed his oil (5 qts) anddipstick shows right on the full mark. Whatdo you think the problem could be???

did you start the truck and run it for a while to fill the filter? It'll take a decent amount on it's own. Any dents in the oil pan from rocks or anything?

Yes, I've been driving it now for about 3 days. Oil pan looks fine. Still shows to be over-filled. I know it has to take 5 quarts, but the mystery of the dipstick is killing me. When I bought the truck a couple of weeks ago, it showed overfull then.

try your friends dipstick in your truck. then measure the two to see if they get the same results versus there length.

Well, I'll try that, but the part number on his dipstick is the same as mine.

dip sticks probably sitting a little to far into the pan. i know my old 92 chevy with a 305 only took about 4.75 qaurts.

at some point, some clown probably put the wrong tube on...or screwed the tube up...

Put an AC Delco P1218 filter instead of the stock. It will provide more filter surface, better flow, and it should be large enough over stock to put the oil at the correct mark. Of course your crankcase may then be 1/2 quart low. or use the above filter and add another 1/2 quart anyway.

I would make sure about the dipstick and tube before changing filters. Better to fix the problem then to "rig it".
