Out with the Bench, in with the Bucket

I have a great condition 1985 Chevy Custom Deluxe. The hood is burnt from a carbeurator fire, and the passenger door has a dent from a lazy attempt to latch a partially closed door. Other than that, No dents, Very little rust, a relatively new interior, and and new engine... My problem, is the Bench seat.... I HATE it... I really want to put in some bucket seats so i can have a console. So, my main question is, How hard is it to convert from a bench seat, to a bucket seat?

I don't have an answer but I feel your pain. I have an 87 silverado and really want buckets. I can't find anything that won't need a mod and then I am worried about security.

Yeah I wanted buckets in mine and remember the floor pan being very weird shaped (as far as mounting buckets anyway). It will definitely take some fabrication. My buddy found a real decent aftermarket custom seat that had the buckets and a flip up middle console all mounted on a rail that bolted into the factory spot. I'm not big on aftermarket seats though so I just had my bench redone. I think if you new how to weld you could find some Blazer or Suburban seats from the same era and make it look factory. That would be COOL!

I found it quite easy with my old 1993 GMC Sierra.

Remove the bench seat (including frame). You WILL need the frames off the bucket seats, so don't buy "just" the seats. I got my seats out of a 1991 Vandura Van, these were silver pillow tufted ones, that were oh-so-comfortable. Two bolts will work on each seat frame. the ones closest to the center "hump" will need to be drilled through. Not a biggie.

Bucket seats from a 1988-1999 should work but remember to buy the brackets as well just look at the floor board and compare it to yours going OEM on seats is the way to go you might even check out some newer truck it can happen if one wants with a little work.

The 1988 and up 1500 floor pan is WAY different than the older trucks. It is very easy in the 88 and up b/c the pan is relatively flat with the hump in the center for the transmission. The older trucks are a TOTAL different story. The pan is elevated about 4-5 inches so most seats are going to be way too high, but like already said I am sure it can be done with a little imagination and fabrication.
