Overdrive doesnt work

I own a 1997 GMC sierra 5.7 and wether it is cold or not my Overdrive doesnt work for a while, or it will then it down shifts then wont go back????????HELP......

check ur alternator. i heard of some guy with a faulty alternator complaining that it wouldn't shift into overdrive. cant hurt to check ;)
