Default 1990 GMC Sierra. Couple of questions.

Hey folks, I am new here. This is a great site, and I am thankful for it. Anyway, I have a 1990 Sierra K1500, that is no show truck, but has been in my family since new. My uncle bought it new, and then a cousin got the truck and let it languish.

I have been slowly putting some time into bringing her back! I have been searching for a way to find out if the truck was a Z71. I have the vin and tried the decoder but it didn't say Z71 package, but I remember (or think I do) that it was one (maybe).

In any event the truck has a home forever. She runs great, and I drive her every day. I just re-wired the VSS, and fixed the speedometer. The engine is in good shape, as is the 4 wheel drive, and transmission. I intend on getting her up into the good condition over the next year or so.

So is there a way to tell if it is a Z71? iS it on the data plate or the VIN?

Here is so far.

New Fuel pump.
New Brakes and rotors all around.
New Sensors all around.
New ABS valve.
New light bulbs everywhere -courtesy etc.
Pressure washing cleaning frame and under body, and am slowly painting it and cleaning it up. (All da paint was gone).
Speedo rebuild coming this week.
Cleaned up wiring in engine bay, and put it in flex tubing.
Polished the craptastic plastic headlights, and tailights.
Painted the roof with spray paint.. lol. It was rusting and didn't want to let it get too bad before I have the truck painted.
Steam cleaned interior and carpet.
New wiper motor.
Flushed and filled transmission fluid.
Throttle body gasket kit.
Coverted A/C to R134a, and it works great!

New window sweeps on inside and outside on order. :=)
New back window (vent window).

Transmission rebuilt, Jasper Engine, 4 wheel drive rebuild, Rear end rebuild. (all done)

Kind regards and thanks. --Dusty

276K miles documented. Well over 350K since the speedometer hasn't worked since 2001!

To tell if it is a Z-71 look in the glove box. There is a code sticker in there and it will say Z71. The codes are in alphabetical order so look towards the end. Good luck, it sounds like you making that truck new again. It's cool to have a truck that has been in the family since new.
