Default Power steering issue

Hi all , I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 4X4 extra cab with a 5.3 and 77,000 miles.

I backed out of my driveway this morning and when I went to turn my steering wheel to the left I heard a groan from the power steering , I thought I was low on fluid so I pulled back in and checked the fluid level , it was fine . I can turn the wheel to the right with no problem but when I try to turn it to the left there is no power assist . the belt is fine the pulley is spinning fine and the fluid level is where it should be .

Another funny thing is that I swear that I can hear a hissing sound comming from under the dash when I force the wheel to turn left.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks , Dave

This would be a good one for Argon.

Have you checked for wildlife inside your dash?

I would be very happy to pull a hissing animal out from under the dash if that was the problem .

I just cant understand why it works find when turned right and not left, a bad pump would either work or not work .(I would think)

Can someone point me towards Argon?

Thanks for the replys guys. Dave

You know what.. If I remember correctly, mine whines a little bit too when I turn it to the left.. I thought there was something wrong w/ my PS but had it checked last timeI went to the drive through oil change and it was all good. And for the record,I was thouroughly impressed with chevrons service! they checked all my fluids and put a sample of the old fluids and the new fluids on a white board so you could see it, feel it, smell it, even taste it if you want. all from the drivers seat while they get you drinks and snacks. totally awesome. They show you everything, drain plug, old filter. And then to top it all off they print everything out that they did and recommended and sign it w/ a warranty. So if your **** fails because they didnt put the drain plug back in its on them.. Totally cool.. 100% loved it. and I got a free car wash...

woah.. toatally got off track there..

anyways. Good luck with your PS. hopefully it doesnt fail.. maybe you could suck the old fluid out and replace it w/ new.

does this truck have hydroboost?..a hydraulic assist for the brakes and not a standard vacuum booster?

harder to turn to the left..a lot harder?..like NO assist to the left only?

Thanks for the reply Argon , The truck does not have hydro boost .
Full power assist turning right , no power assist when turning left and you can hear the groan like low fluid when turning left . The truck is drivable , but at slow speeds it is an 04 Chevy when turning right and a '55 Chevy when turning left.

Thanks , Dave
