R-12 to R-134a conversion, 1988-1993 folks
 

Hi all,

I want to get the air working again in my '93 Sierra, mainly so I don't have to drive with the windows down fading the interior. It's lived its entire life in a garage, and I'd like to keep it all as new looking as possible.

It does still have the R-12 system in it, and converting it is a lot cheaper than running down someone with all the R-12 stuff, and then buying the freon to do it.

A few years back, I converted my old 1993 GMC Sierra, and it was pathetic. Might as well have had no A/C at all. On a 85* day, it was 80* in the truck. The air coming out of the vents was cold, but it never cooled the truck down any. I replaced the orifice tube, dryer/accumulator, and compressor (old one was bad). All of the parts were "designed for R-134a", so they shouldn't have hindered the performance any.

Has anyone else here converted their 1988-1993 GMC/Chevy truck and had good results? I know the R-12 used to freeze you out of the cab, and that's why I'm willing to go that route if needed, but if R-134a tends to work well in these, I'll probably just convert it, and hope it went better than the last one did.
