Default rebuilding the dodge killer

Im currently collecting some information as to how much it would cost to rebuild the big block. It was running when the guy pulled it he said that it just started smoking really bad on the one side but it still ran. He figured it was a valve or a hole in the piston. i want to rebuild so that its fairly powerful but yet very strong and reliable. Any information would be appreciated!

Big blocks are cool but you can make a lot of power with a small block for a 1/4 of the cost.

I think he was wanting to stay original if I remember correctly.

What color was the smoke?
White - head gasket. Replace both head gaskets and intake gaskets and change the oil a couple times within the first 1000 miles.
Blue/grey - Oil in the cylinders. If it is only upon start up it's most likely valve guide seals. If it's constant check the compression in each cylinder before you tear it down.
Black - Excess fuel. Possibly a valve. replace plugs and wires and check timing.

As for cost. Check rebuild kits @ jegs or summit if you plan to do it yourself. If it dropped a rod, holed a piston, or bent a valve the cost could get high quick.

Im thinking of allowing a 4000 budget so hopefully that will get it done. Im not sure of the color of the smoke though.
