Replace or Rebuild transmission?????

hey guys,
89 GMC 4x4 with 700R4.
I have two questions really.
Im pretty well convinced that my tranny is junk...Wont go into 3rd gear.

1)Is it worth rebuilding or replacing my tranny???

2)AND, is there a better tranny to go too?????? instead of staying with a 700r4.

Has anyone switch to a different tranny??? Anybody had a similar situation???

Any help would be appreciated.

Or is this asking to much??

Depend what you do. Are you pulling or doing it for performance to be faster?

Well i mainly do muddin with the truck, so about 5 or 6 times a year for 8 hours each time the gas pedal is to the floor. So yes it's mainly performance, I want something i can beat on and wont blow up everytime i take it out.

Now i've been talking to a few guys and they say go to a TH400 or TH350, but the tranny shop i go too says that would be a mistake.

Because the gear ratio for 1st gear in the TH's is way to high for what i am doing, something like 2. somethin to 1. But the 700R4 has kinda a bull low 1st gear something like 4.somethin to one.

So in saying that, if that is true. Why are so many guys saying to go to a TH??

Keep the 700R4 for sure! Just have yours rebuilt. There are plenty of performance transmissions shop that can make yours handle a bunch of horsepower. It is geared lower which will help you mudding and has the overdrive for on the street. To me it's a no brainer!

Well after talking to the tranny shop and you guys, im gonna get the 700R4 rebuilt fursure. After finding out what the specs are with gearing i am better off with the 700R4.

But what has me puzzled, is why so many guys recommend going to a TH??...

Looking at it now, it doesn't make sense to go to a TH.
