Test the vehicle speed sensor circuit for an open, short to ground, or a short to voltage

What year is the vehicle (Electronic or cable)? Is it the speedometer or just the odometer?

I have a 99 Silverado and have had a similar problem. My odometer worked intermittently for the last year, but now it is totally off. Everything else works fine, gages, speedometer, etc. I'm not sure what the problem is either, but it makes it difficult to schedule maintenance!!! Any suggestions?

My friends speedometer wasn't working either. to fix the problem he had to get a whole new instrument cluster. Just like yours it was only the speedometer that quit everything else worked fine. probably a short circuit. just my thoughts you could have a totally different problem.

There are a lot of speedometer repair companies on the internet. Just use Google. (Also check to see if one of them is near your location). I also saw a GM website recently that lists the repair sites where GM dealers send speedometers. Can't remember how/where I found the link to it.

Well, I have good news to share, and YES, this is worth reading entirely. I had the same issue with my odometer, it would work sometimes and then it finally quit working altogether. The suggestion came up to change out the instrument cluster; so I compared repair shops on the iternet (repairs started at $129.00 + shipping) and then I found an instrument cluster on E-bay for $70. I purchased the cluster and changed it out in less than 10 minutes. This is one of the easiest tasks I ever performed on any vehicle. Here's the cool part: My Silveradohad over 142,000 miles on it before the odometer quit working (a year ago). The new cluster kept the OLD mileage from whatever vehicle it came out of. The mileage is not kept in the vehicles computer like some suggest; instead, the mileage chaged to 131,000!!! Since my title says 142,000 miles, it looks like I'll be keeping the truck around for at least the next 9,000 miles. I do like happy endings.
