Strange alternator problem 1990 gmc k1500

Default Strange alternator problem 1990 gmc k1500
With alternator single brown wire connected and alt charging my truck spits and sputter and backfires unhook brown wire so alt will not charge and truck runs fine. Anyone have this problem?

Maybe the diodes are blow in the alternator, giving the truck too much A/C voltage to handle. Unplug the coil feed wire, alternator quits charging and gets nice clean DC from the battery. Just a thought.
