tire size question

my truck currently has 265-75-16 size tires and I need to buy a new set. I want to go with a slightly narrower tire at 245-75-16 because it will be a little cheaper. Walmart says they will only put on the size recommended in the door jam of the truck. So.......I decided to order the tires from TireRack and have someone mount them. My question, and I'm ignorant about this so don't beat me up too much if it's a really dumb question, is whether the 245 sized tire will fit the rim? Basically is the width of the rim preset to the 265 written in the door jam?

Now im no expert, and dont quote me but I think your ok. My friend just downsized and I beleive the downsize is the same your looking at, he went from the Uniroyal to BFG all terrain. Hope I helped a little, but if I were you id wait for a pro to answer you on here.

You are only talking about a half inch narrower, so you will be fine. Also beware of tire rack as a friend of mine has bought several sets of tire from them and 1-2 out of each set has had a tire go bad. They just let the tires sit too long without rotating, so they deform.

RE: tire size question

yea you will be okay its only 20 mm difference on the width. the only thing that you would need to be worried about is the hieght of the tire will affect the vehicle speed and alter the speedometer.. i work at firestone so any questions are welcome bro!

those 245s are usually the stock size on these newer chevys anyways half tons at least.

RE: tire size question

I went to Sears to ask about the BFG tires they had as well as asking about changing the width of the tires from my current 265 to 245. The person entered my truck in the computer and he said 265 was the manufacturer's width. He also said going with a different width will effect toe-in, toe-out, or alignment. I have been working on cars over 25 years and never heard that before for only 20mm difference. I have about one year's whole of tread left on my tires now and will change to a slightly thinner tire next year.
