Transmission problem 2000 silverado c1500

Greetings to all. What a great site.
I was moving to CA from MI and towing a uhaul trailer and about four hours into the trip I pulled over so my son could go to the bathroom. When we started back out, the truck was "slipping" like I was on ice. Got about 50 ft and the truck would not move. When I hit the gas the engine just raced. I shut the truck off for a few minutes and started it back up and got to move about 50 ft and then nothing. I checked fluid, added some and again about 50ft and nothing. My question is, could this be the torque converter? The guy I bought the truck from said the trans was rebuilt 2 years ago. I don't understand why the truck would work for 50ft then stop. I'm hoping it is just a clogged filter, selenoid. If anyone could throw out any suggestions, it will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, dead in CA. Robert L

It is very posible that your torque conberter took a crap. Another thing that you might want to check just in case is your fuel filter, that could also make it so that you do not get up to a higher speed.

No not fuel related. Definately either the torque converter or the clutches for your gears have gone bad. Don't know why it would work great for you for 4 hours and then all the sudden not work. I would think the local tranny shops there would be of more assistance in helping solve this problem than us though.

It could also be your front pump. We you put fluid in it, how low was it?

Thanks for the help guys. I know I just have to get the wrenches out. I should probably drop the trans pan and see how much metal is in there. If not much, then replace the filter and see what happens. Then get any codes that maybe sending out.

Someone told me that there is an automatic shut down on these4L60-E transmissions so you cannot fry them, is that true?

72charger, you are right about the transmission shop. I just don't have the money to take it to them and I was hoping for a quick easy fix.

Thanks to all for your time. Robert L.
