My service engine soon light came on last week, so I went to autozone to have diagnostics done, and it was a code for the MAF. But it seemed to be running fine and the light went off and didn't bother until tonight on my way home from snowboarding with my friend up in Duluth, MN. I had about 1/4 tank of gas and was running about 70 down the highway when it cut out all of a sudden...so I slowed down even though it kicked back in right away, but about a mile later I was getting almost no response from feathering the accelerator. Popped it into neutral at about 40 and pulled over as it died. About ten minutes later it fired up but died about 5 seconds after start-up. I was thinking it might be the fuel pump since the engine turns over but won't fire anymore. I'm on vacation and I'm looking for ideas...I have to get back to Minneapolis tomorrow night or Wednesday.

 

check fuses first then I would verify that the engine is getting the 4 basic....fuel, fire, air, compression. one of these is missing could also be the ignition module went out(just a guess with out knowing the status of the 4 basics) or the most obvious...no fuel or frozen fuel(this is Minnesota where it has been below 0 for some time now)

 

Had the same issue with my 89... turns out that my fuel pump fuse witch was located on the passenger side firewall in the engine compartment was sitting in the holder loose... the vibration was making the fuse arc and cutting out the fuel pump.. a quick squeeze of the prongs with needle nose and i was back in business..
