Very hard to shift in and out of park

My 2002 GMC Sierra 1500HD 6.0 liter 4x4 became stuck in park after using a lot of force I pulled it into drive now it takes a lot of force to put it in or out of park.It will shift of between the other gears.

There is a part under the dash (I can't remember the name) but it makes it where you have to have your foot on the brake to shift in and out of park. It is probably out of adjustment or bad.
