Whats involved in removing the driveshaft to grease it?
 

I read where if i remove the driveshaft and repack the splines with grease, it will help with the driveline clunking, is that true and is there anything special i need to do to remove it? I remember with my older CJ's, you had to be careful not to drop the caps or disturb the little roller/needle bearings inside the caps, is this the same idea? Is there a Circlip holding the universals on too? My wifes Avalanche had plastic Circlips on hers. Any help will be greatly appreciated as i am no mechanic. Jim

Agreed. It's worth it just to replace the U-joints, then you dont' have to worry about it later. All you do is unbolt the two u clamps from the rear and pop it off. Drop it to the ground and pull her out. Simple as that. Easiest way to replace U joints is to press them out with a vise

If they dont have grease fittings on them then put some new ones on that do.........and a little heat will take care of the injected plastic to hold the OEM ones in

If you are not planning on changing the U-Joints then just remove the 2 straps that hold the rear U-Joint to the differential and yes be careful of the end caps falling off. Slide the driveshaft out of the transmission, grease the crap out of it, and slide it back in. Reinstall the rear caps and give it a test run. Good Luck!!!

Very easy to do and the end caps on mine had some sort of plastic that looked like it was injected like chrismo2000 said. Made a big difference yet some claim that around 10,000 miles you will have to repack the drive shaft. My truck is just getting close to 10,000 miles since Ive done this and haven't had the issue back.

wont have any leaks from transfer case will it? mine has the clunk also. would u do this to both front and rear shafts or just the rear??
