Wheel Bearings 2000 Silverado 1500 Z71 4x4

Are these wheel bearings able to be repacked?

If not, what is typical replacement cost. Midas just told me $400+ per wheel. WTF? How can that be?

Any idea re: life span of wheel bearings?

I have the whole spongy brake feel....does anyone else experience this or know what the cause is. I have already replaced master cylinder and bleed lines. It seemed like it fixed a little but still there. Anyone have any suggestions?

About a month ago, i had the ABS light come on in my '03 Silverado. It was the drivers side wheel bearing. @ my local dealer, $450.00. The hub assy was $350.00 alone. I also found out, the Wheel speed sensor, which i believe is attached to the hub, can be replaced w/o replacing the hub assy. That was the route i'd have taken had it been a faulty WSS, but i wasn't that fortunate. Correct me if i'm wrong Argon that WSS can or cannot be replaced/serviced individually.............. Thanx, Jim

omg 400 a wheel. ok ok, dude its easy as ****. im gonna help you out and cut that price in half. first of all no they cannot be repacked. you replace the whole hub. 2 its easy so dont be afraid of getting your hands dirty. if you can do your brakes you can do this. ok first obviously take off your tire. then using torque bits take out the 2 bolts going through for your caliper. take off caliper and brakes. then you have 2 18 mill bolts holding the braket for the brakes. take that off. then using a hammer and a flat head AT AN ANGLE!!!, tap off the dustcap. then using a hub socket (about 4 dollars from pepboys) have a buddy hold one lug while you take off the nut and dont forget the washer. then turn the spindle left or right. yu have 3 15 mil bolts holding the hub to the spindle. using a box end take these out. if you feel likefighting witha impact and wobble bit be my guest.right by the upper shock mount you have a harness connector. pull it out of the top, the upper control arm and the spindle.then tap with that same hammer and flathead betweeen the dust shield and hub. be patient, take it off evenly. install is exactly reverse and very straight forward. on install just remember to seat the cv joint completly. in fact youve inspired me to do a write up. but trust me, its easy. probably 1.5 to 2 hours for the first hub and 45 minutes for the second.

Sealed bearings piss me off man. I never replaced a hub til my 91' I just repacked them every 30K-40K or so on my other vehicles. I know its not hard to do but wheel bearing grease is a hell of a lot cheaper than a hub!

Hey Motoguy, I did call NAPA, and they gave me 2 prices, as they had 2 seperate hub assy's. Yes, 1 was like $215.00, and the guy @ Napa told me directly, DO NOT BUY the CHEAP one, as they are JUNK. You'll be doing it all over again in 6 mos. The other one was basically the same price as i paid @ the dealer. Wasn't sure if the cheap one had a lifetime warranty or not as @ the time, i was too mad to really listen if it had a lifetime warranty. I thought he said a 1 yr warranty but then again, not sure. Jim
