why did GM use plastic?

I can't believe GM used plastic sides on the step-side pickups. I was backing a trailer up thismorning with my truck, long story short I backed it up to sharp and the trailer rail stuck out far enough that i completely by passed my bumper and cracked the side of my truck at the wheel well! I am still in shock right now so before I go into a bout of wailing and screaming, I thought I'd ask how much these usually are and how difficult is it to replace them? Seems like you could just unbolt one side since the bed is metal and the sides aren't. Am I right?

RE: why did GM use plastic?

The entire bed side from the seem (right below the bed rail) to the very bottom is all one piece. Its kind of a pain to take apart, but it can be done. I suggest having someone help you put the new side on. They crack pretty easily at the bottom corners. Sides are pretty expensive, they can also be patched with Bondo but it looks like crap.

My 93' was the same way. I guess they did that to decrease weight and it was easier to form.
