will this 4160e work in my silverado
Hi, new to this group so, hello!
My question is, I have a 96 silverado 2WD EXT Cab w/5.7 the tranny went out so I've been looking for a used tranny so I can get the truck back on the road and sell it. I find what I think is a tranny that will work. It's out of a 96 Caprice. Well...that's what the guy that sold it to me has told me and sticks to his story. from what checking I've done it won't work. E-bay sez "not compatible" I'm sure it will bolt up but, will it work? Help I'm confused!! |
They may bolt up but it won't work
The 96 Caprice will have the 4L60E tranni Your 96 Chev Truck will have the 4L80E To confirm the difference, count the bolts on the tranni oil pan the car will have 16 bolts on the oil pan and your truck will have 17 bolts BUT Your 96 Silverado could have the 4L60E which means the caprice transmission will work. |
Thanks...after counting, it is a 4L60E. but, on the Caprice tranny where the shifter is. There is the old style "U" shape where it looks like a round linkage hooks to. On the Silverado it has a Cable type shifter. Will the cable type hook up to the Caprice tranny?

You could swap the gear selector levers on the transmissions to make it work. I just pulled the trans out of my own '96 4x4 silverado and all you have to do to the shift cable is put a screwdriver in between the cable and the lever and pop it off. It's just a friction fit.
Is it a 1500 truck? Just make sure that both 4l60-E transmission look the same on the outside and the linkages (like you've already found) match up, then yes, it should fit right in. |
