wiring a third brake light
just picked up a third brake light from a 94-98 model. but mine doesnt have a cargo light or a brake light. wondering how to go about wiring this thing up. should i go through the brake switch and the courtousy lights? any ideas would be good.

bump.

RE: wiring a third brake light
your gonna have to come off the brake switch and run its own wire...you can't "pick up" the brake signal after the t/s switch,or the chmsl will light when the t/s are on
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
ok so run its own wire down to the switch thats on the pedal? and as far as the cargo light whats the best way for that one power from a switch and from the courtousy light circuit to?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
you can come inside and wire it to your courtesy lights...at the dome lamp.
the brake switch..find the wire thats hot when the pedal is depressed....itrs white..i think |
RE: wiring a third brake light
and then just ground the 3rd light to something?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
yes...your dome lamp wiring in the roof has a ground....
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
oh ok so to wire up the outer lights just run it into the dome lamp, for the brake light to the switch. and if i want an external cargo light switch just wire that up and jump it into the dome light wiring thats at the light?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
yep..should work....
you'll need a test lite to find which wire gets hot at thr switch..get a somewhat decent test lite...not a dollar one |
RE: wiring a third brake light
well looking at the brake switch the white wire goes down into a splicing with more wires connecting to it. am i correct in assuming this is the hot lead when depressing the pedal?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
I think so...but if ya havea test light, better check it
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
how do i wire the switch in, for now its only wired into the courtousy lights so when the door opens they go on, if you click the lights on they go on.but a switch to turn them on and not the interior lights?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
on 90's models,a switch on the dash gave you the option tohave the cargo on when the door was opened....I was just thinking about the 3rd lite..if you want the cargo to work independently,it will take another switch

RE: wiring a third brake light
i got a switch but i didnt understand the dome light power. is it all positive power or is one a neg and the other a pos? cause i wasnt sure how to wire that switch up to get it to work without blowing the whole courtousy circuit. and on the brake light do i just ground the other wire?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
ran into a kink with the brake part also. wired it all up to the white hot lead. and now. whenever connected the brake lights STAY on and the tails are lit up like brakes. disconnect and turn on the lights and they are dimmer.? checked the fuses all are in tact. is this the switch itself gone bad?
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
well the brake light itself turned out to be a shortage in the brake switch itself just not sure how to wire that external switch to the cargo light.
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
argon now my brake switch is very sensitive sometimes the pedals weight is enough to turn them on. i put a spring on the pedal to correct it for now. but didnt know of a good way to adjust the pedal on a non spring type pedal.
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
the switch is not in correctly...the "U: clip goes over the rod,but also make sure that square peg slots in the grooves
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
If you got a switch with a light in it the ground for the light can be causing the lights to stay in brake mode.
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
double checked the switch and its sitting on the clip and in place snug. and as far as it being a grounding issue i thought this at first till i realized the pedal had a little play to it and when pulling the pedal up the lights go off... the spring i put on the pedal today at least is keeping them from staying on for now.

RE: wiring a third brake light
when you depress the pedal, the switch stays stationary,right?..the only part that moves is that little adjusting tab...
adjust it by pushing the peedal as far as u can, then pull that tab back to ya |
RE: wiring a third brake light
ill give this a try. and yes its stationary and only the tab moves
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
I was in reference to the cargo light switch. I may have misunderstood, I though you put a switch in to operate that.
|
RE: wiring a third brake light
not yet was tryin to figure out the wiring to it without messing the courtesy up. it was a problem with both sorry about the confusion.
