ok this has happened twice on me ,,i have a 1996 chevy silverado with 96,000 on it runs fine with no problem but this has happened twice on me ,,go somewhere shut it off come back out and crank and crank and will not start ,,,,let it sit for a few hours and starts and runs like new ,,this has happened twice ,,what could cause this problem ,,no engine light comes on or anything out of the ordinary.just will not start once in awhile.until it cools off.

Sounds like the starter solinoid is going bad. But I am not for sure on that, but it sounds like it.

Yep, certainly sounds like it; my old '94 did the same thing. You'll have to replace it, might as well get a whole new starter. Gotta pull it off anyway when you put in the solenoid.

Man.... did I just say 'old' and '94' in the same sentence? I'm getting old myself.

Fuel pump....when the key is turned to the "on" position you should be able to hear it. In other makes I have seen this problem arise from a gummed up catalytic converter but those were all foriegn, and not mine.
I would agree with Argon, although I would like to know what the temperature of the motor has to do with it. I'm not questioning you, just trying to educate myself.

Well if the fuel pump were just getting worn out instead of plain ol' failing, that would explain it. It is an electrical part and eletrical parts need to cool off when they start giving up....... kinda like the stupid window motors in my Camaro!!![:@]

RE: wont start

its not the starter it cranks over fast and long ,as long as you try it ,,its not the starter ,, i was leaning towards fuelpump but wanted to get some suggestions ,,, i really think its something electrical either the ignition or the fuel pump ,,, i have mostly all older cars 50's and 60's and trucks and if they dont start its either the points or out of gas ... so im still listening to ideas so lay some more on me ..and thanks so far

Well Argon knows better than all of us and he didn't even bother to ask you any questions so I'd go with his advice first.

lol..ty..

To be SURe.you need a fuel pressure gauge, and to check it while its not running...

but...Vortec that spins but won't light = a pump
