Engine Life

I am looking to buy a work truck. I am looking at international 4300/4400 ... how many kms do the engines usually go to on these trucks? i am seeing some at 400,000kms for sale?

I don't know about the internationals, but at the shop I used to work at we had Western Star straight trucks

They both had CAT straight sixes and leaked oil all over the place, but both were overhauled at around 500k miles and then sold at 850k miles.

I was gonna say the same as Kevin. Usually 400 to 500k they will get a freshening up rebuild. Then good to go for another 400k

so not worth buying an international?

I do not want to buy a truck with say 400,000kms on it then have to spend $20,000 on an engine

If you can get it for a steal and pay the $2000 to $2500 for a rebuild and still stay within the black book value... Then yeah go for it. But this is why your seeing them on Kijiji for sale around the 400000km, cause these guys don't want to get them rebuilt.

Get some prices on a rebuild... where ever you are may very in price

I thought diesel trucks can last up to 1,000,000kms? Now I feel like all the trucks I have been looking at for 250,000-400,000kms are bad news?

Oh yeah... The big rigs rolling up and down the hwys and interstate highways will see those high numbers. But the smaller diesels ie straight trucks, dump trucks and even the medium duty trucks are averaging half that. Simply because of the stop and go city driving
