Default 99 dakota v8 318 idle issues

i first noticed it when driving idle would go up in down , but it also does it while in park.
if idling at 1k it will go up to about 1500 - 1800 rpms then come back down to 1k then back up, the check engine light does come on also. thanks

You will have to do basic checks like spark plugs, replace the spark plug and check whether it is working properly or not. As well check the spark plug wires because these wires sending voltage into spark plug to work properly.

Sounds like either a vaccuum leak or an idle air controller. I had a vaccuum leak on my dakota that raised the rpms at idle to around what I'm guessing is 2000 (mine doesn't have a tach). There's a short 1 1/2 foot or so hose that runs to the idle air controller on the firewall on the pass. Side. That's where mine leaked.
