Intermittent cruise control problem

I have an '05 Ram, 5.7 hemi, with an intermittent cruise control problem. It engages fine, will resume set speed when you push the "resume" button, and it will even increase in ~1 mph increments for each push of the "resume" button. The problem is the "decel" button. When the cruise is set and you push the "decel" button it will, most of the time, decelerate about 1 mph for each push of the button, BUT sometimes (about 25% of the time) pushing the "decel" button has no effect. Holding the "decel" button in will cause the cruise control to simply turn off (as indicated by the dash "cruise" light to go out). On a trip it will sometimes start to work correctly after driving for a few miles, other times it will not work correctly until after making a stop. Anyone else ever have a similar problem and if so what was the issue? I'm hesitant to tear in to the steering wheel to look at the switches for fear of getting an air bag in the face.

Thanks,
Fred
