Default trying to decide which to buy..

maybe im not posting this in the right location, sorry if in wrong place. but here goes.. And i realize its in the dodge section so i will probably get more ram opinions..

I am about to purchase a new truck and have it narrowed to 2. I am looking for opinions or facts on these two if anyone has any. The price is the same for either, so money is not a consideration on them. Both are 2012, Crew Cab, 4x4, SRW, Automatic. All other options are as close to same as possible such as tow package, locking differentials, keyless entry, etc..

The two trucks are Ram 1500 and Silverado 2500HD.

I am looking for ideas so i can base my decision, as this truck will hopefully be with me the next 10-12 years (i currently am driving a 97 Z71 1500, with 376,000 miles)

The truck will be used as a Daily Driver, transportation of kids to school functions, some boat towing, and possibly a long haul to family vacation (no trailer)..

thanks for any ideas..

Thanks mr. s...

feel like i am over thinking this decision.. Comparison has come down to a lot of little items.. by the way both trucks will have Gasoline/flex fuel engines (hemi vs 6.0 vortec), so the HD is not duramax equipped.. i forgot to list this in original post..

Yeah I figured it was a 6.0 when you said the price was the same. I would still go with the 2500HD. The way I look at it if a guy who may not absolutely need an HD truck buys one it should just last that much longer. With all the heavier duty options (especially the transmission) there will be less wear under normal driving than a 1/2 ton truck. This may be the overkiller in me, but I like having more truck than a job calls for. I have friends that are diehard Dodge fans and they take more trips than I would like to the transmission and rear end shops. I think the gas mileage will be a little less with the Hemi as well. Good luck with your decision!

If you are looking for a best performance truck then I would suggest you to go with Silverado 2500HD.

The Chevy HD is a great truck. So is the RAM 1500. I've owned both RAM and Chevy 2500 gassers. Some general comments. These assume you are looking at either the Hemi or the Chevy 6.2 gas engines with the lowest gearing possible

  • W/ a 3.92 gear I get significantly better gas mileage than my friends Chevy 2500 6.2 gas w/ 4.10. On the highway he says he's getting 14 at best. My RAM gets 16-17 mix in town/highway. I just drove from Kansas City to Pensacola and back. Most of the time doing 75-80 I was getting a consistent 19.2 - 19.4 MPG
  • I tow a 31 ft 7000 lb travel trailer with my RAM no problem. I do use an 10,000lb Equalizer WDH. I don't do this often. About 10 - 15 times a year.
  • Hemi W/ 17 in wheels and 3.92 is rated at 10,000 lb tow capacity. I would be very comfortable up to about 8,000 lbs
  • The Chevy will have heavier suspension. My RAM rides like a Cadillac at the cost of having a lighter duty suspension
  • The Chevy has WAY better ground clearance. Of course, if you want a real comparison here you should compare to the RAM 2500 solid front axle. Same true for my comment above
My last truck was a Chevy 2500. My 2011 RAM meets nearly all of my requirements. If I'm not satisfied with anything its the ground clearance, (I do have the off road package). As soon as my stock 32 inch tires wear out I will put on a mild lift w/ 33 inch tires

I'd go with the chevy, Hands down. I really don't like dodge trucks. I littreraly ripped the back axle out of one.
