1975 ford 4x4

I have a '75 ford mud truck with a 390 in it. I want to replace the four speed manual trans with an automatic. Something thats going to hold up.Any ideas of what I can use with little to no fab work? Also want to replace the transfer case. Same question. What's the best out there?

Well you can replace the 4 speed with a C6 automatic from another 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 391, 406, 410, or 428. I don't know how easy it will be to do that, but it won't be hard for someone with mechanical knoledge. You probably want to get a floor mounted shifter(aftermarket item Hurst makes them for sure) to make it easy otherwise you will have to get a new steering column from an auto truck.

I don't know why you would replace the transfer case unless it had something wrong with it. it is most likely the NP205 which is a bombproof t-case, and even if it's not I don't know of any Ford t-cases that suck.

Honestly unless you are in love with this truck it might be easier to trade for an automatic truck. Many people would love to have 390 4 speed. It would not be to hard to do the swap though, but you must find an automatic trans(C6 is strongest ever) from a 4x4 with an FE engine.
