How to improve my mpg on my F250 1972 360 V8?

My 1972 F250 runs 6.6 mpg. No towing or heavy loads, what is a normal usage and how to improve. Is it possible my timing isn't correct? I changed the spark plugs and mounted an open airintake filter instead of the original oil bath filter.
Whats next?:confused:
