Timing Issues

Howdy y'all. Surprised I didn't know about this site until now. I'm lovin' this! Anwho, bought a 74 F100 with a 390 off a fella in Dallas who put a rebuilt motor in her. Runs good but timing has always been an issue. I replaced the timing chain and gears this weekend 'cuz chain failed deflection test, makin' sure #1 was TDC on the compression stroke. She runs a lot smoother now, but after I put her back together timing was at 38 adv. I swapped vaccuum line on carburetor and it dropped to 30 but I'm at a loss. I don't know what cam the fella threw in it, just that it's an RV. Suggestions?
