diesel dually mpg improvements?

I have recently purchased a 1999 F-350 Powerstroke with the 7.3ltr turbo diesel engine fitted.
It has 63k mls on the clock,& I suspect has only had basic services done.
I recently fitted a new air filter when it had an oil change,& it seemed to "breath" easier,& picked up speed quicker,& ran smoother.
We towed a big 5th wheel up to WA from 'Vegas(975mls),& it only averaged 10mpg!
Is this OK?
It does about 15mpg around 'Vegas on short(sub 15ml) trips.

If the above mpg's are OK,is there any way I can get better mpg for a few hundred $$$$'s?

Thanks in advance,Mick.

That doesnt sound bad really, Compared to a motorhome which would get about 5 to 6. I plan on pulling a 40' with mine and will be happy to get 10/11 compared to my 5 in my gas motorhome. I am also getting around 15 empty.
